OceanCare. For Healthy Living Oceans.

The ocean covers more than 70% of the earth’s surface. It is home to millions of fascinating animal and plant species – many of which remain undiscovered. The vast scale and phenomenal biodiversity of the marine world fills us with amazement and holds us spellbound.

However, the marine ecosystem is being thrown out of balance because humans are leaving their indelible mark on it. Plastics and loud noises pollute the underwater world, many fish have been overfished, and numerous marine mammals and other wildlife are still being killed today.

OceanCare has been raising its voice on behalf of marine life since 1989. The international marine conservation organisation, based in Switzerland, holds Special Consultative Status with UN ECOSOC and contributes to Agenda 2030 and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Drawing on our deep passion, in-depth expertise, dedication and perseverance, we are committed to healthy living oceans. Your support makes our work possible.

Thank you for being at our side.

      PETITION
Our nature is not a waste dump!
      Stop unnecessary single-use plastics.

We call on the Swiss federal government: Stop shifting away your responsibility, but apply the instruments already in place within the Environmental Protection Act! Under this law, the Federal Council can ban the single-use plastic items, such as take-away items and plastic bags from the Swiss territory, independent of the material used, and can stop the sale of cosmetic and personal products containing microbeads in Switzerland.

SAvE Whales – protecting sperm whales from ship collisions

There are about 200 sperm whales left in the eastern Mediterranean. Busy shipping routes cross through their habitat often resulting in collisions with whales. For regions where re-routing is not possible, OceanCare funded the development of the high-tech system «Save Whales». It warns ship captains when whales are present.

New scientific paper emphasizes the major welfare concerns related to boat strikes on whales

Sadly, many whales are struck each year by boats and as shipping has increased, so have these ship-strikes. Many whales are killed outright in such encounters but some, with varying degrees of wounding, survive. This new research is the first attempt to consider the severity of ship-strikes on whale welfare....

Highly unusual beaked whale strandings in Cyprus caused by naval exercises

Beaked whales, which are a group of deep-diving medium-sized whales, are known to be especially vulnerable to loud human noises. They are rarely seen close to shore and they rarely strand. In recent years, unusual mass strandings of beaked whales around the world have been linked to loud noise events...
