Volunteer to help give a sea turtle a second chance at life
Rescue, care and research of sea turtles in the Maldives
The Maldives offers a truly special experience: our partner organisation Olive Ridley Project (ORP) offers interested volunteers a unique chance to actively contribute to the rescue, care and research of sea turtles.
Would you like to help ensure that sea turtles, that are threatened worldwide, have a future? On Baa Atoll, you can join the team at the Marine Turtle Rescue Centre on the island of Dhuni Kolhu and support the veterinary team in caring for their patients. It is one of the most unique sea turtles rescue facilities in the world. Over 2–4 weeks, you will deepen your understanding of sea turtles and their conservation – and make new friendships in one of the most beautiful places on earth.
Your contribution on the ground
At the Marine Turtle Rescue Centre, you will take on a wide range of tasks: preparing food for the turtle patients, observing and documenting their behaviour, guiding visitor groups through the centre, and being there when rehabilitated animals are released back into the ocean. Most patients are Olive Ridley turtles, which are frequently victims of ghost nets or other plastic debris. Since the centre opened, more than 255 turtles have been treated, with around 60 percent successfully returned to the sea. Every volunteer makes a difference
What to expect
A placement at the Marine Turtle Rescue Centre is intensive and physically demanding. You will be working in a hot and humid climate and will also assist with physically demanding tasks. Requirements include a minimum age of 18, strong swimming ability and a willingness to work as part of a team. No prior experience in veterinary medicine is required. Please note: the Olive Ridley Project does not offer placements or externships for veterinary students. The programme language is English.
