Tethys Research Institute Celebrates 40 Years of Marine Research and Conservation
Founded in 1986 in Milan, Italy, Tethys Research Institute marks four decades of pioneering cetacean research and conservation leadership in the Mediterranean. OceanCare congratulates its long-standing partner on this milestone.
On January 31, 2026, Tethys Research Institute celebrated its 40th anniversary, a milestone dedicated to the research and protection of marine mammals in the Mediterranean. OceanCare congratulates Tethys on this remarkable achievement and thanks the entire team for their outstanding contributions to cetacean science and unwavering commitment to ocean protection. For more than two decades, OceanCare and Tethys have worked together as partners, united by a shared vision for science-based marine conservation.
A Pioneer in Mediterranean Cetacean Research
Since its founding, Tethys has been taking a lead in developing field research activities in many regions in the Mediterranean Sea, including Italian waters and Greece, instrumental in studying numerous cetacean species in the Mediterranean, providing fact-based guidance towards decision-makers, whether within governments or the private sector.
Due to their experience and substantial contribution in research findings through publications and science-based recommendations, Tethys experts have been engaged over the years in senior and leading roles within scientific bodies of regional agreements, such as the Scientific Committee of ACCOBAMS (Agreement on the Conservation of Cetaceans of the Black Sea, Mediterranean Sea and Contiguous Atlantic Area), IUCN expert groups, and other international institutions, where their publications and science-based recommendations continue to guide conservation action.
Beyond their research and conservation achievements, Tethys has provided a platform to hundreds, even thousands of people engaging in citizen science projects, diving into the world of scientific research and the work by scientists in studying cetaceans in their natural habitat through their research expeditions in the field.
A Partnership Built on Shared Values
OceanCare and Tethys have collaborated for more than two decades, united by a common vision for ocean protection and a commitment to science-based advocacy. This partnership exemplifies how persistence, scientific integrity, and long-term dedication truly make a difference for marine mammals.
OceanCare’s President and Founder Sigrid Lüber and Director of International Relations Nicolas Entrup were present at Tethys’ anniversary celebration in Milan, personally congratulating the team and expressing deep gratitude for their extraordinary contributions to marine research and conservation. As a gesture of appreciation, OceanCare presented Tethys with a certificate of recognition, honoring four decades of inspiration, credibility, and impact.
