‘Sailing Across a Wounded Sea‘: A Mediterranean Evening with Marine Ecologist Giuseppe Notarbartolo di Sciara

April 18, 2025

An inspiring evening in Vienna shed light on the beauty, fragility, and future of the Mediterranean Sea. On April 10th, 2025, OceanCare and ShiftingValues welcomed guests to the Filmquartier Vienna for A Mediterranean Evening — a special event focused on marine biodiversity, ocean protection, and the urgent need to restore balance in the Mediterranean ecosystem.

A Voice for Marine Conservation in the Mediterranean

At the heart of the event was renowned marine ecologist Giuseppe Notarbartolo di Sciara, whose life’s work is deeply intertwined with the conservation of the Mediterranean. He presented his new book, Sailing Across a Wounded Sea, and spoke with Nicolas Entrup, Director of International Relations at OceanCare, in a moving dialogue about decades of experience in marine and species conservation—about challenges, achievements, and a deep, personal connection to this unique ecosystem.

„The sea is wounded, but it’s still alive. And there are many things that we can do to cure it and to make it go back to its pristine health. I spent my life listening to the sea. It’s time now that we all listen – and do something about it.” – Giuseppe Notarbartolo di Sciara.

His words resonated deeply with the audience, underscoring the urgency of collective action to protect the Ocean.

„Sailing Across a Wounded Sea“ – a book, that takes you on a unique journey

Sailing Across a Wounded Sea offers readers a symbolic journey across the Mediterranean — drawing from real-life encounters with whales, dolphins, monk seals, and rays, while exposing the mounting ecological pressures facing the region. More than a memoir, the book is a call to action. It blends scientific research, personal storytelling, and political insight to inspire awareness and responsibility.

It asks a powerful question: How can we mourn the loss of something we never truly knew?

A Global Initiative: Because Our Planet Is Blue

The event also spotlighted OceanCare’s international campaign Because Our Planet Is Blue, which aims to raise awareness of Ocean threats — from plastic pollution to ship strikes with marine mammals — and amplify efforts to protect marine life globally.

The Mediterranean Sea, as one of the most biodiverse and heavily impacted marine regions in the world, symbolizes both the challenges we face and the hope we can foster.
