OceanCare Calls for Release of Captain Paul Watson
OceanCare has appealed to Danish leaders, including Prime Minister Frederiksen, Ministers Rasmussen and Hummelgaard, as well as select Danish Embassies for the release of Captain Paul Watson, detained in Nuuk since July 21 due to anti-whaling actions in 2010.
While OceanCare engages in different ways in our efforts to end commercial whaling and to increase the protection of cetaceans, we are seriously concerned about this situation.
In our appeal for his release, we highlight Paul Watson’s decades-long dedication to ocean conservation and emphasise the legitimacy of protesting against Japan’s whaling practices, which, in the Antarctic waters, violated established international agreements aimed at protecting whale populations. We also express our concerns about Paul Watson’s health, potential extradition, and a likely unfair trial in Japan, framing it as a political move against environmental activism.
OceanCare urges the Kingdom of Denmark, known for its democratic values and general stance on human rights, to show leniency and ensure Watson’s immediate release, emphasising the broader implications for global environmental justice.
