Sophie Zweifel, Ph.D.

Junior Science Officer

Sophie Zweifel has followed the work of OceanCare for over a decade and has officially joined the team in 2026. She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Edinburgh, earning a Master of Chemistry (MChem) in 2016 with a specialization in Environmental Chemistry. Building on her thesis research into biomineralization in marine organisms, including phytoplankton, she went on to obtain a Ph.D. at ETH Zurich, where her research focused on interactions between phytoplankton and bacteria in the ocean.

Alongside her scientific background, Sophie has long been passionate about scientific communication, outreach, and writing - interests she now brings together in her role at OceanCare. Outside of work, she is a fiction writer, spending her time exploring worlds that are stranger, and even less well known, than our own blue planet.
