Sandra Striegel
Science Officer
Sandra Striegel holds a bachelor´s degree in Environmental Sciences from ETH Zurich and a master´s degree in Marine Biology from the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen in the Netherlands. She has been involved in various research and conservation projects, including field studies on whales in Canada, sea turtles in the Caribbean, and rocky shore ecosystems in the Mediterranean. She is particularly interested in the impacts of climate change on the ocean: she has studied its effects on sea turtles, explored the ability of corals to adapt to warmer and more acidic waters, examined the potential of large whales to help mitigate the effects of global warming, and conducted research on marine heatwaves and their effects on marine organisms and ecosystems.
Already between 2021 and 2023, and again since 2025, Sandra Striegel has been supporting OceanCare in the fields of ocean conservation and climate issues, with a particular focus on the impacts of climate change on cetaceans. She contributes to expert workshops on climate change under the IWC and on marine pollution under CMS, participates in ASCOBANS meetings on behalf of OceanCare and engages in international working groups.
Privately, too, Sandra Striegel is committed to giving a voice to the magnificent, yet often overlooked marine creatures and their unique ecosystems. In addition to her scientific work, she writes. Her first book on sea turtles was published by Delius Klasing Verlag.
