Johanna Berger

Scientific Officer

Johanna Berger has always been drawn to the sea and its fascinating inhabitants. Whether diving, sailing, or kitesurfing – she loves any activity that takes place on or below the water's surface. After completing her bachelor's degree in biology at ETH Zurich, she worked as a dive master in Madagascar. There, she enjoyed the beauty of the underwater world daily, but was also confronted with the damage that humans cause to marine habitats. In her master's degree in ecology, Johanna Berger focuses on statistics and data analysis. In her master's thesis, she is investigating the distribution of plankton in the Atlantic Ocean and analyzing correlations with ecosystem services such as CO₂ uptake by the ocean.

Johanna Berger joined OceanCare as an intern in 2023. She has been a permanent member of the organization as a scientific officer since 2024. With her scientific expertise and great passion for the ocean, she supports the scientific team in climate science issues and works closely with partner organizations. A particular highlight of her work is that she regularly commutes by ferry, doing exactly what she loves – being on the water and gazing out into the distance.
