Ocean Policy Consultant – Shipping Specialist
After serving aboard oceangoing merchant ships and gaining extensive experience as a navigation officer, Alexandros Xydias moved into key roles at major shipping companies. Motivated by a strong commitment to academic development and professional excellence, he earned a master’s degree in international law and sustainability. His studies focused on innovative strategies to reduce the environmental footprint of shipping in the Aegean Sea.
Alexandros Xydias joined OceanCare as a Shipping Specialist, contributing to its Invisible Pollution team. In this role, he actively engages with shipping companies and stakeholders to mitigate the impact of underwater radiated noise. He participates in international forums and technical committees to advocate best practices and regulatory improvements, and collaborates closely with IFAW to promote the Blue Speeds campaign.
Additionally, Alexandros Xydias works with shipping companies, operators, and authorities at both local and international levels to implement measures that protect marine biodiversity from ship strikes involving marine mammals. His work focuses on safeguarding marine mammal habitats and developing practical approaches to align marine operations with conservation goals, aiming to reduce the externalities of shipping through operational measures.
