Basic research on microplastics

Scientific studies show that the Mediterranean is among the regions most heavily polluted with macroplastics and microplastics. However, according to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), data on the composition of plastic pollution and its development over time are still insufficient. Key figures are particularly lacking with regard to microplastics.

OceanCare investigates the level of surface water plastic pollution in the research area in Sicily. Macroplastic samples are examined visually during the research trips, while microplastic samples are taken by a special net and then sent to a specialised laboratory for analysis of number, size and chemical composition of the microplastic particles. These samples will be taken at regular intervals over the coming years to enable us to draw scientific conclusions about the development of plastic pollution and the dynamics of particle spread through local currents.
