Dolphin Conservation in the Red Sea
Where tons of tourists pounce on dolphins
In Hurghada, a popular holiday destination in Egypt, swimming with wild dolphins has become a major tourism attraction. Day after day up to 35 excursion boats go to reefs that are important refuge areas for local dolphin populations. The animals are being ruthlessly besieged and disturbed. They are being chased and crowded by the boats and even wounded by the propellers.
Since 2012, OceanCare has supported the Dolphin Watch Alliance, a local NGO, to raise public awareness. Dolphin Watch Alliance researches the behaviour and distribution of the dolphins and promotes responsible dolphin tourism. They conduct educative campaigns and train boat staff. The two organisations jointly advocate making the important region off Hurghada a protected area.
