More than 4,300 people made use of the opportunity to express their concerns to the US authorities about seismic surveys planned for November and December off the island of Santorini, Greece.
OceanCare had informed the public about the project of a US-based company to carry out intensive noise activities in crucial habitats of the most endangered marine mammal species in Europe – the monk seal – and deep-diving whales. The US Marine Mammal Protection Act provides the public with the right to voice their objections.
In addition to the thousands of protests, OceanCare submitted a detailed expert statement (“Statement of Concern”) to the US authorities as well as to the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), based in Montreal, Canada.
OceanCare now hopes that the project will be rejected. We will keep you informed about further developments.
