Crossing the Atlantic in a rowboat
Today, Janice Jakait, 34, from Neulussheim, Germany, started her big adventure she is preparing for two years: crossing the Atlantic Ocean in a row boat. With a smile on her face and 3.500 nautical miles of ocean in front of her, she put the rudder into the water starting her journey.
Expected 120 days, including Christmas, turn of the year, up to March or even April, Janice will be all by herself in her hightech-rowboat - the Bifröst. Her life-saving companions will be solar-panels, GPS- and highly sophisticated safety and desalination equipment. The take-off weight was 1080 kg, of which 250 kg is special food.
If successful, Janice will be the first German woman succeeding in this challenge.
„I am so excited to start rowing in a few moments, just making my dream come true. A dream I was preparing for so intensively for two years. This is a self-fulfilling trip for me, testing and challenging my own limits, finding peace and experiencing the silence of the oceans. Silence above the water, which has become rare for marine species below the surface being threatened by increasing underwater noise. My project is a statement for a silent ocean” states Janice Jakait right before entering her boat.
“Row for Silence”
Janice is also very passionate about the status of the ocean and with her adventure active to support the efforts of the conservation organization OCEAN CARE mitigating underwater noise pollution. The timing is excellent. This week representatives from 116 countries meet in Bergen, Norway, discussing conservation measures for migratory species. One of the main topics to be discussed: to address noise pollution as a threat to marine species.
